Although cinemas are closed in many parts of the world, some promising films are coming soon. One of which is Da 5 Bloods that director Spike Lee made for Netflix. The film is about Vietnam, then and now.
Spike Lee is the next major Netflix filmmaker after Martin Scorsese, among others (The Irishman) and Alfonso Cuaron (Roma). It will be his first film for the American since it was awarded BlacKkKlansman. That film earned him three Oscar nominations, one of which he managed to cash in on.
Da 5 Bloods tells the story of four African American veterans from the Vietnam War who return to Vietnam years later. There they search for the remains of their fallen team leader and a treasure allegedly buried there. The foursome, together with the son of their former team leader, must fight against people and nature while they are confronted with the havoc caused by the Vietnam War.
The four Vietnam veterans are played by Delroy Lindo, Clarke Peters, Norm Lewis and Isiah Whitlock. Chadwick Boseman plays the fallen team leader and Jonathan Majors plays his son. Spike Lee not only directs the film, but also co-wrote the screenplay with Danny Bilson, Paul De Meo and Kevin Wilmott.
With Da 5 Bloods Netflix and Spike Lee are clearly aiming for new success at the Oscars. After all, films from streaming services will also be eligible for this next year. The first images in the trailer look promising. Spike Lee himself called classics as Apocalypse Now (Francis Ford Coppola) and The Treasure of the Sierra Madre (John Huston) as inspiration.
