Whatsapp gets this Facebook feature – long wait is over

Now it’s happening, finally: Whatsapp is getting a function that has been available on Facebook & Co. for a long time. That’s behind it.

The start of the Whatsapp reactions is getting closer: After there have been corresponding indications of the introduction of this innovation for months, the first users are now actually getting this function “on the loose” for testing. And with the Whatsapp beta for Android. At least that’s what WABetaInfo reports.

We haven’t yet been able to discover the function in said beta on our Android smartphone, but that’s because it was only released for a small group of users at first and only later did more Whatsapp users get access. But it shouldn’t be long before “Whatsapp Reactions” becomes available to all Whatsapp users.

What are Whatsapp reactions?

Users can respond to a message, for example in a group chat, with six emojis: thumbs up, heart, smiling smiley, surprised smiley, sad smiley and hands folded in prayer. Once the user has selected a reaction, an icon will appear at the bottom right under the message. The whole thing looks like this:

Long way to start

There were first indications of the new reactions function (“Reactions”) in Whatsapp in September 2021 (we reported).
Odd thing on the side:

In January 2022, the setting option to control the display of Whatsapp reactions was discovered in beta versions of Whatsapp for Android, iOS and desktop, which we reported on here. So the option for reactions notifications was included in beta versions before the reactions functionality itself.

Ultimately, Whatsapp users are given the opportunity to react to received messages (in an individual chat or in a group chat) without having to enter a text. A function that has existed on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and other social services and chat programs for a long time. The number of reactions shouldn’t be limited, but over 999, “999+” will be displayed.
