which models are made in France?

With a car recovery plan with very French accents, the issue of manufacturing in the territory is becoming topical again. But what are the truly electric cars produced in France? Automobile Propre takes stock.

Guaranteed French origin, “made in France”… many mistakenly associate French brands with local production. In reality, it is more complex and the production sites vary greatly depending on the vehicles and the strategies adopted by the manufacturers. To see more clearly, here is the list of electric cars manufactured in France and, more generally, the places of production of the best-selling electric vehicles on the French market.

ZOE, Kangoo, Smart and DS3, waiting for 3008

The sales star, the Renault ZOE, is the standard for tri-color electrics. Launched at the end of 2019, the second generation of the Renault city car remains assembled in Flins (78). While Renault is expected to present a stimulus package this Friday, May 29, the future of the site is uncertain, however. Also at the Losange, the Kangoo Z.E. has been from Maubeuge (59) for many years. It will be renewed in 2021.

Another model rooted in the territory, but not French: the Smart fortwo. The German micro-city car leaves the chains of Hambach, in Moselle, and recently only in its electric version EQ. However, the half takeover by Geely will lead to its relocation to China from 2022. The Mercedes EQA and EQB planned for the end of 2020 will replace the micro-city car, so as not to close the site. Finally, the DS 3 Crossback E-Tense, whose brand is swimming in a very frank promotion, is very French. The small electric SUV has a production in Poissy (78).

As for the plans to come, it is certain that the Peugeot e-3008 will be assembled in Sochaux (25). Renault will do the same with its first electric SUV. Inspired by the Morphoz concept and based on the Alliance’s CMF-EV platform, it will be assembled at the Douai site (59). Its industrialization will begin towards the end of 2021.

The future Renault Kangoo Z.E. should stay in France

In the East, a lot of new

Apart from these “made in France” electric cars, it should be noted where the French Top 10 electric cars are manufactured. The new contender for the throne, the Peugeot e-208, comes from Novo Mesto in Slovakia. The big brother e-2008 does not do any better, assembled in Vigo (Spain). Sometimes the queen of sales, the Tesla Model 3 is one of the most distant. Today assembled in Fremont, California, the American sedan will reach the European continent by 2021 with the opening of the “Gigafactory 4” in Berlin.

Another car from the other side of the planet, the Kia e-Niro, the production of which remains located in Hwaseong, South Korea. Its cousin, the Hyundai Kona electric, has moved closer to the European continent. Since spring 2020, its 64 kWh version has been assembled in Nosovice, in the Czech Republic. Always gone after 10 years of career, the Citroën C-ZERO, clone of Mitsubishi i-MiEV, arrives from Japan. Same for the Peugeot iOn

Among the other stars of the market, we will not fail to mention the Nissan LEAF, assembled in Sunderland (United Kingdom), and the BMW i3 whose industrialization takes place within the German factory in Leipzig. As for the Volkswagen e-up !, it is designed in Bratislava with its binoculars at Skoda and SEAT. Slovakia will also produce another electric vehicle: the Renault Twingo Z.E. production of which will begin in the fall of 2020 at the Novo Mesto site alongside the Smart forfour EQ.
