The Luxembourg Football Federation has announced the cessation of competitions in anticipation of government measures. Only the elite championships will be maintained.

(MD and PJ) For most divisions, the football season is over. So decided the Luxembourg Football Federation (FLF) which, Monday evening in the board of directors, decided to stop the national championships. Three exceptions: the BGL League, the Women’s Ligue 1 and the futsal division 1. For the rest, it will therefore be a “white season”, without relegation or rising to the top division.

It goes without saying that the health uncertainties weighing on the organization of matches and compliance with the sports calendar are at the origin of this decision, confirmed Tuesday by a statement from the president of the FLF, Paul Philipp.

It is true that the solution had been in the air for several weeks. The authorities had thus announced their intention at the end of February, in case the health measures required by the government were extended beyond March 14. And this will be the case, since Xavier Bettel and Paulette Lenert now wish to maintain the current arrangements at least until April 2.

If the ax has therefore fallen for the lower divisions, the BGL League will have a lot to do in the coming weeks to catch up with the matches passed by the trap, either because of virus, or because of degraded weather conditions. This was particularly the case at the time of the resumption of the season, last February: land impassable due to frost. The now massive use of rapid covid screening tests should allow meetings to be held under insured medical conditions.

Initially scheduled to be inaugurated during the qualifying match for the 2022 World Cup between Cristiano Ronaldo’s team and the Roude Léiwen on March 30, the new sports infrastructure will not be ready in time.

The FLF has also announced that it intends to set up a “financial support fund” for clubs whose budget has been damaged by the crisis and the loss of related revenue. Due to a lack of spectators, the teams were deprived of financial income whether they were due to the sale of tickets or to purchases made at refreshments. the details of this device should be unveiled next week.

The Federation will also ensure, as soon as conditions allow, to organize football activities (tournament type). Clubs would be invited to participate, without any attendance requirement.
