Windows 10 May 2020 update: All innovations at a glance

Windows 10 May 2020 update is just around the corner. This time there are many useful innovations: hardware drivers via Windows update, reset from the cloud, quick search directly in the start menu and much more.

Windows 10 users will soon be able to enjoy a comprehensive, free update:

Windows 10 May 2020 update (Windows 10 version 2004) is in the starting blocks and should appear in May 2020.
However, it will not be immediately available to all users via the Windows update: it usually takes a few weeks for it to appear on all computers.

In autumn of this year there will be a major update for Windows 10, but it will probably not offer any new functions. In this article, you will learn what new features the spring update for Windows 10 brings and how you can get to the update faster.

20H1, 2004 or May update: that’s the name of the new version

Microsoft already had the big update “completed” in December: “finished” only means that no new functions have been added since then. However, there have been multiple updates to fix errors – and will also be available after the official release.

The final version name is Windows 10 Version 2004 (read “twenty-zero-four”), even though Microsoft will not release the update until the end of May 2020. This is to avoid confusion with the older Windows Server 2003. The long term internally used expression 20H1 for the first half of 2020 is not communicated externally. Windows 10 20H2 is also the internal name for the upcoming autumn update.

By the way, if you want to find out the version of the system you are using, press the key combination Win-R, type winver and click on “OK”.

Optional updates are designed to update hardware drivers

Do you remember the optional updates for Windows 7? Microsoft is back in the spring update for Windows 10. The hardware manufacturers can also update the drivers for the components installed. That could greatly simplify the required updates for drivers, such as

Microsoft’s blog post
describes. In the pre-release versions of Windows 10 2004, you still had to search for “optional updates” in the Settings app to call the function. That should change if more hardware manufacturers participate.

Automatic restart of apps simplifies further work

Without autostart: If you want to prevent some applications from starting automatically after Windows logon, leave the switch under “Restart apps” set to “Off”.

Windows 10 automatically opens some programs that were previously open, for example after a Windows restart or when you log out and log in again. In the “Settings” under “Accounts -› Registration options “under” Data protection “there is a switch” Use my registration information to automatically complete the device setup after an update or restart “. As with previous versions, set this to “Off” if you want to prevent the programs from starting automatically.

In Windows 10 version 2004, Microsoft has now added a new switch under “Restart apps” under “Accounts -> Login options”. By default, this is set to “Off”. If you switch it on, Windows saves the status of the open programs before logging in, shutting down or restarting. This way, you can continue working exactly where you left off, even if you have problems and a forced restart. The previously mentioned switch under “Data protection” continues to exist.

Cortana now in its own window and with new skills

New Cortana version: The voice assistant now appears in a window that can be moved around on the screen. This enables a constant view of the chat.

New Cortana version: The voice assistant now appears in a window that can be moved around on the screen. This enables a constant view of the chat.

Cortana, Microsoft’s digital voice and search assistant, should, like colleagues from Amazon (“Alexa”), Apple (“Siri”) and Google (“Google Assistant”), be able to do even more in the future. This has little to do with Windows 10 at first. Because behind speech recognition is an artificial intelligence from Microsoft servers. The AI works completely independently of Windows – Cortana can also be installed on Android and iOS devices. The “intelligence” was already sufficient to answer simple questions such as “How will the weather be tomorrow” or “Which were the most popular films in 2019”. Sometimes Cortana answers the questions directly or displays search results on the Internet.

The skills are to be gradually expanded. In the future, it should be possible to speak to Cortana like a real person, that is, to formulate natural questions. To do this, Cortana needs to understand the context and have additional information to correctly classify the questions. If you have a question like “When’s the meeting with my department head?”, You can only hope for an answer if the voice assistant knows the name of the department head.

Initially, the new Cortana version could only communicate in English, and according to Microsoft, not all functions of the predecessor are available yet. That will change until the final completion of Windows 10 2004. Consequently, the Cortana app also logs in as “beta”.

Cortana is now an app:

The most striking innovation is that Cortana is no longer docked on the taskbar, but now lives in its own window. This can be moved on the screen and remains open when you switch to other applications. The design change makes sense because it also keeps an eye on the chat history, which, for example, provides information about upcoming appointments. Since Cortana is now its own app, configuration is also done in the app.

New Windows login options

With Windows 10 you can choose between several login methods. Microsoft prefers to log in with a Microsoft account, which Windows asks for during the installation.

In addition to One Drive, other online services such as webmail may also be attached to the Microsoft account

https://outlook.live.com
. It is therefore recommended to use a password that is as long and complex as possible. However, since you do not want to type this in every time you log on to Windows, Windows offers alternative options.

You can find this in the “Settings” under “Accounts -› Login options “. You can turn on Windows Hello Face Detection or Windows Hello Fingerprint if you have compatible hardware. Or you can set a four-digit PIN by clicking on “Windows Hello-PIN”, which you use instead of a password when logging in. The PIN is now also requested in safe mode.

New in Windows 10 version 2004 is the switch under “Windows Hello login for Microsoft accounts required”. By default, this is set to “On”. Logging in with a password is no longer possible. If you set the switch to “Off”, then switch to a different section under “Accounts” and then back to “Login options”, you will see the additional options “Password” and “Image code” as before.

If only a small monitor is available, work under Windows 10 can be made more efficient. Use the Win-Tab key combination or the “Active applications” icon in the taskbar to open the task overview, which shows you preview images of the open windows. Click New Desktop to create a virtual desktop. What is new is that you can now click on the name of the desktop, for example “Desktop 2”, and change the name. Alternatively, use the context menu item “Rename” of the preview image.

All other functions work as before. Use the mouse to move windows from one desktop to the other in the task overview, or use the context menu. Move the mouse over a desktop to display preview images of the programs that are open on them, which you can then bring to the foreground with a click of the mouse. It can be deleted using the cross at the top right of the respective desktop.

The quickest way to navigate to the next or previous desktop is with the key combinations Win-Ctrl-Arrow right or Win-Ctrl-Arrow left.

Windows 10 offers numerous options under “Settings -› Ease of use “, which can be used to improve the display on the desktop. The settings under “Text cursor” are new. If you set the switch under “Text cursor indicator” to “On”, you can choose the desired size and color. The text cursor is used in applications such as Notepad or Wordpad, but is also used for input fields such as in the web browser. By default, it is sometimes difficult to see. With the new option, the text cursor gets colored markings at the top and bottom, which emphasize it more clearly.

Microsoft has improved the display of the optional features

A standard installation does not set up everything Windows has to offer. Some functions are very special and would only take up unnecessary space on the hard disk. In the “Settings” under “Apps” after clicking on “Optional Features” you can determine what is already installed. These are, for example, Microsoft Paint and Internet Explorer 11. You can also uninstall the programs, but you should not do this with Internet Explorer 11. Some programs no longer work correctly who you delete the browser from. The list now shows the installation date and the required hard disk space under Windows 10 version 2004.

Additional features can be installed by clicking on “Add feature”. The selection now appears in a clear list that can be filtered using the input field. You can also check the desired features and select them for installation at the same time.

At the top right of the “Optional Features” window, the link “More Windows Features” appears, which leads directly to “Windows Features” in the Control Panel. Here you can set up the Windows subsystem for Linux or the virtualization software Hyper-V (Windows 10 Pro only).

New WSL 2: More performance for Linux under Windows

Linux subsystem: Thanks to WSL 2, Linux programs can also be started under Windows. In Windows 10 version 2004, Microsoft has improved performance.

Many server applications from the Linux world do not run optimally under Windows. Microsoft therefore provides the Linux subsystem (WSL) for Windows 10, in which you can start Linux programs without major adjustments.

A desktop environment can also be set up, but it can only be used indirectly under Windows. For desktop applications on Linux, it is better to use virtualization software such as

Virtualbox
or the program Hyper-V under Windows 10 Pro.

For web developers or programmers, however, WSL is often a more convenient way to use or test server applications for Linux, Docker containers or tools for the command line without virtualization software or changing the work environment. Under Windows 10 version 2004, Linux applications in the new WSL 2 subsystem should benefit from faster file system access, and Docker containers should also work more easily thanks to full system call compatibility. Another improvement: With WSL 2, main memory is released again when it is no longer required, which reduces the memory requirement.

Distributions such as Ubuntu 18.04, Open Suse Leap 42 or Debian GNU / Linux can currently be installed in the Linux subsystem via the Windows Store. For detailed information and instructions, see the Microsoft documentation on

Advanced update settings for slow internet

Limit download: With slow internet connections it is recommended to set a value for the absolute bandwidth. This reduces the network load.

Limit download: With slow internet connections it is recommended to set a value for the absolute bandwidth. This reduces the network load.

So far as can be seen, Microsoft has changed nothing else in the basic update configuration. In the “Settings” under “Update and Security -› Windows Update “it is still possible to set an update pause for seven days. And via “Advanced Options” you can specify how long the installation of updates should be suspended. A maximum of 35 days can be set.

News can be seen under “Update and security -› Delivery optimization “after clicking on” Advanced options “. Here you can now set an absolute bandwidth for updates downloads. The setting under “Restrict bandwidth when downloading updates in the background” refers to the automatic Windows update; “Restrict bandwidth when downloading updates in the foreground” concerns updates that you have initiated yourself, for example in the Windows Store. Both are intended to help users with low connection speeds in particular to reduce the network load. The previous options, in which a relative percentage value for the bandwidth can be specified, are still available.

Restore Windows 10 from the cloud now

If Windows frequently shows errors or crashes, the system can be reset. In the “Settings” there was already an option under “Update and Security -› Recovery “. After clicking on “Let’s go” under “Reset this PC” you can choose between “Keep my files” and “Remove everything”. The restore is done from the files of the installed Windows on the hard disk. However, if important system files are damaged, the recovery may fail.

That’s why Microsoft Windows 10 version 2004 has added a new function. The path leads again via “Let’s go” under “Reset this PC”. Then choose between “Keep my files” and “Remove everything”. Windows now shows the options “Local reinstallation”, which corresponds to the previous behavior. A new feature is “Cloud NewsABC.net”, in which all files are downloaded and used for repairs in a similar way to a new installation. Broken files from the previously installed Windows should not hinder the process and it should run faster despite the downloads.

Note:

“Keep my files” always refers only to personal files, for example under “Documents”. The installed programs are lost in any case and must then be reinstalled. If you want to use their settings and data again later, you should – depending on the program – at least the installation folder and the folders “C: ProgramData” and “C: Users “[Username] AppData “. A complete backup of the system is even safer.

Finally, a few practical improvements

The Windows search (Win-S) now offers the four quick search buttons “Weather”, “Top News”, “Best Movies” and “Bing Quiz”. The Task Manager now shows the load, memory usage and temperature of the GPU via “More Details” in the “Performance” tab for a separate graphics card. And for 2-in-1 devices that can be used both as a notebook and as a tablet, Microsoft has revised the tablet mode.

Install version 2004 now

With a productively used system, the update should not be carried out prematurely. After the official release date of the Windows 10 function update, it usually takes a few weeks for most of the teething troubles to be eliminated.

If you are looking forward to the innovations, you can also set up the new version in parallel to the old one. To do this, you need a free partition on the system hard drive or on a second hard drive. For installation, boot the PC from a DVD or a USB stick with the setup files and install Windows 10 as usual. Enter the free partition as the target. A boot menu appears when you start to choose between the systems.

Installation in a virtual machine, for example in

Virtualbox
. You do not have to change the partitioning of your hard disk for this.

For the new installation you need the ISO file with the Windows installation files. After the official release, download

the ISO
using the Windows 10 Media Creation Tool. It can also be used to fill a USB stick in a bootable manner.

The website offers an interesting alternative

https://uupdump.ml
. Here you select the version 20H1 (2004) with an older or newer insider build. After selecting the language and the desired editions, click on “Create download package”. You will receive a ZIP file that you unzip. Start “aria2_download_windows.cmd”. You can watch the download from the Microsoft servers in a command prompt. The result is an ISO file with the Windows installation files. To create a USB stick for the installation, use

Rufus
. The ISOs – regardless of their origin – can also be used for an update. To do this, mount the ISO on the file system using Windows Explorer and the context menu item “Provide” and start “Setup.exe”.
