Windows 10 Pro: Create and use a virtual PC with Hyper-V

With Hyper V you can easily create a virtual PC in Windows 10 Pro. We’ll explain how it works.

Windows 10 Pro offers many advantages compared to Windows 10 Home, which we explain in detail

introduce this post.
A change doesn’t have to be expensive:

As soon as you have purchased the Pro product key, you can enter it in the Windows 10 settings under “System” and “Info” by clicking on “Change product key or update Windows edition”. After a restart, use Windows 10 Pro instead of Windows 10 Home.

One of the advantages of Windows 10 Pro is the Hyper-V virtualization technology, which Microsoft only delivers for end users in this Windows 10 variant. With Hyper-V you can set up a virtual machine in no time at all. This is especially useful if you want to regularly try out new software or other things on the PC without having to endanger the security and stability of the productive computer. Hyper-V is also suitable for testing as a Windows Insider a new pre-release version of Windows 10 without the need for a second computer.

Note: Windows sandbox

– Under Windows 10 Pro you can also activate and use the Windows sandbox to quickly try out a Windows program in a secure environment. You can find more information about activating Windows Sandbox

in this PC WORLD guide.
All programs installed there are then lost after the Windows Sandbox is closed. Windows Sandbox is not a real alternative to Hyper-V.

Requirement for using Hyper-V

Hyper-V must first be activated in Windows 10 Pro

On Windows 10 Pro, Hyper-V is not enabled by default. You must first activate the components required for this. To do this, enter “Activate or deactivate Windows features” in the search input field next to the start menu. A new window appears, listing which components of Windows 10 are already installed and which can still be installed.

In this window, search for the entry for “Hyper-V” and click on the box to the left of the entry. Then click on “OK”. The components for the use of “Hyper-V” are now installed and after a restart you can start.

If “Hyper-V” cannot be activated, it is probably because the guest system either does not support the system requirements for using Hyper-V or the virtualization function of the processor has been activated in the BIOS. Call the BIOS with a restart of the computer. The switch for activating the processor virtualization technology (Intel VT or AMD-V) is usually hidden in a BIOS menu for advanced CPU functions.

Get there faster with Hyper-V quick creation

If Hyper-V is activated, you can open the application with “Hyper-V Manager” in the search input field to the right of the start menu button, with which you can control all Hyper-V functions. Here you can create or manage a virtual computer or change the hardware of virtual computers.

But it can be made even easier: With the latest function updates for Windows 10, Microsoft has introduced the “Hyper-V quick creation” application, which can be used to create new virtual machines very quickly. By default, the wizard offers three selection items:

  • Windows 10 development environment (based on Windows 10 Enterprise)

  • Ubuntu 4/18/1 LTS

  • MSIX Packaging Tool Environment (also based on Windows 10 Enterprise and is aimed at developers who want to prepare their applications for distribution)

Via “Local installation source” you can also create a virtual machine using an ISO file or an inserted DVD installation medium. You can get a fresh Windows 10 ISO for installation, for example, by using it

The new virtual machine is ready for use after a few seconds - we can now install Windows 10

After clicking on “Create virtual machine”, it will be created within a few seconds and you will receive the confirmation “The virtual machine was successfully created”. With a click on “Edit Settings” you can now influence the hardware configuration of the virtual computer and determine, for example, how much main memory it can use and how many processor cores it can use.

Install and use Windows 10 on Hyper-V on a virtual machine

With a click on “Connect” you start the virtual machine for the first time. When starting for the first time (e.g. from the ISO file), the operating system must now be installed. Proceed in the same way as you would install the operating system on a new computer. In the case of Windows 10, the installation doesn’t take too long. You can also skip the request for a product key during the installation and make it up later.

The finished virtual machine then appears in the “Hyper-V Manager” in the main window under “Virtual Computers”. Here you can also manage, start and maintain several virtual machines.

Start virtual machine via desktop shortcut

Would you like to start a virtual machine directly from the desktop and not always open Hyper-V Manager? Then simply create a corresponding link.

Right-click on an empty space on the desktop and select “New – Shortcut”. Click “Browse …” and then select the entry “vmconnect” in the Windows system folder “System32” on the system drive. Then hang on to it

localhost

and in quotes the name of the virtual machine. In our example, the link is about

C: Windows System32 vmconnect.exe localhost “Win10 HyperV”

Now give the shortcut a meaningful name: For example, “Start Windows 10 Virtual PC”. In order to be able to start the virtual machine from the desktop, you now have to specify that after double-clicking the application should always be opened with administrator rights.

To do this, right-click on the shortcut and then select the “Advanced” entry in the “Shortcut” tab. In the “Advanced properties” window, check “Run as administrator”. Finished.
