The next spring update of Windows 10 promises a whole range of new and useful functions, including the monitoring of the SSD hard drive and the startup folder. We present the most important features.
Windows 10 will soon be easier to adapt to your own needs
Microsoft has just completed the autumn update for Windows 10, and the developers have long been working on further development. The next version, which, unlike the current autumn update, is a real function update again, is planned for spring. It remains to be seen whether it will actually be called “21H1” (for the first half of the year 2021) or spring update again or something else, as currently planned. In any case, version 21H1 will come up with a number of new and in some cases extremely useful functions, which we will introduce below.
Windows 10 can be specifically customized in the future
Microsoft wants to make it easier for Windows users in the future to adapt their system to their primary purpose. In addition, after the setup, Windows 10 offers the choice between several profiles, from preferred games to business use. Each of these profiles should later have a preset combination of settings, tools and services, which can, however, also be adjusted later. Microsoft is currently showing the customizable Windows installation on a trial basis and evaluating user feedback.
The memory settings app will be improved and significantly expanded in spring. It then not only shows how much space is used on the data carrier for which purpose or by which programs. In addition, there are “cleanup recommendations” that make the previous disk cleanup and additional cleanup software superfluous. The same applies to disk management for re-partitioning and re-partitioning the hard disks. In future, all you have to do is click on “Manage data storage devices and volumes” to really display all partitions, make adjustments or encrypt the drive.
Android instead of Windows runs on Microsoft’s new Surface Duo mobile device with two screens. When the folding smartphone will be available in Germany, however, is open.
Thirdly, the operating system in version 21H1 monitors the function and status of the system data carrier: a kind of health check, also without additional tools. This includes the temperature and an estimate of the remaining life of the hard drive. The function is currently limited to SSDs with NVMe protocol, SATA flash memory and magnetic hard drives are initially excluded.
Windows 10 October Update:
The innovations and first problems
The operating system monitors SSDs and the startup folder
Windows 10 will be able to monitor SSD data carriers in the future: Everything is OK on our test system, the system hard drive shows no problems or signs of age.
In addition to the SSD check, Windows 10 will in the future monitor the autostart folder and notify users of automatically starting programs with notifications on the desktop. It is no longer necessary to look at the “Autostart” tab in the Task Manager. There are only minor changes to be made to the Task Manager itself. The previous column “Platform” in the details tab is now called “Architecture”, but nothing has changed in the entries for the 32 and 64 bit processes.
The new editing options for DNS settings directly in “Network and Internet” of the Settings app should also be emphasized. Previously, you had to call up the old control panel and click it multiple times with the mouse. Changes to the Windows subsystem for Linux, a new file manager with access to the Linux system, the easier assignment of the standard programs to file types and a lot more are just the most important innovations of the spring update 2021 of Windows 10 – but only as of the end of October, which must be noted with limitation. Because the functions shown here were in the latest Insider version, Build 20231.xxx, at that time. It remains to be seen whether Microsoft will actually take over all of these functions in the final 21H1 version. Conversely, other features can also be added.
In the meantime, an archive function for apps that were no longer used was integrated in the system, which deleted such apps to make room. In the end, however, it had disappeared again.
Insider Builds: Here’s How to Try the New Features for Yourself
Build number 20xxx stands for the spring update version 21H1. The 2020 versions have the numbers 19041 (May update) and 19042 (Autumn update).
Instead of just reading about the future functions, you can try them out for yourself beforehand. Namely about that
Windows Insider Program
. Microsoft provides interested users with the preliminary versions of upcoming Windows versions. Participation requires registration, but it is free.
There are three variants to choose from: “Release Preview” loads the new versions, which are basically finished, a little earlier than via Windows Update. The beta channel offers access to the next, but not yet finished Windows version: over the summer, to the autumn update that has just been released. And in the Dev-Channel (“Developer”) Microsoft is already distributing the version but one, currently the spring version 21H1 with the main build number 20231.
Depending on the time of your registration and use, the 21H1 pre-release versions are still in the dev channel or have already been moved to the beta channel. Only trying it out helps. You can find a detailed guide to Microsoft’s Insider Program
