Wine column: Santé, maman! | Culinary

My mother loved the Côte d’Azur. Sea, sun, olives and rosé were the reasons that she even moved there for a while. Just outside Cannes, with Brigitte Bardot as a neighbor. Then you know …

However, the beach of Mandelieu did not appeal to her. Too many mafia types looking for an adventure with their speedboats on one of the Iles de Lérins. Then rather go to Plage du Pellegrin, an hour away.

This beach somewhere between Le Lavandou and Hyères is one of the secret gems of the Côte d’Azur. Fine sand (quite unique to the Côte), azure blue water, poison green pine trees and only one tent. This brings back memories of Saint-Barths in the Caribbean rather than the busy French south coast.

Café Léoube is called the tavern. Wine from the adjacent Château Léoube is served on the terrace between waving white linen cloths. This estate is almost as secret as the plage. In contrast to the a little further away Domaine Ott, especially known among real estate boys for: ‘Do me just one Ottje’.

Although Domaine Ott is very expensive, it is also of impeccable quality. Romain Ott, the fourth generation, is responsible for the wine at Château Léoube. Practically the same terroir and Romain’s knowledge guarantee a quality comparable to that of its prestigious neighbor, but at a fraction of the price.

Love by Léoube is the entry-level model. Made from grenache, cinsault and a little mourvèdre. With strawberry, redcurrant and some Provencal spiciness, an ideal mix for rosé.

Let’s raise a glass lovingly to maman’s centenary. Santé!
