With parameters: upgrade Windows 10 faster

Microsoft has given the Windows 10 setup program a number of useful startup parameters. Unfortunately, part of it is reserved for volume licenses for companies. But there are some interesting starting options left.

In order to be able to use these, you first need the Windows 10 installation files

Then insert the USB stick with the setup file into the Windows 10 PC that you want to upgrade. Open the command prompt under the installed Windows, for example with the key combination Win-R and entering CMD.

In the command prompt, change to the drive letter of the USB drive. If it is E:, type E: followed by the Enter key. In the next step you can start the Windows upgrade as usual by entering setup. This way, the upgrade is no different from the one that you can start with a double click. Only when you add a parameter do you change the procedure.

Help: You can use “help” as an innocuous test option. Enter the command setup / help at the command prompt. Then a window opens that shows an overview of the available start parameters.


Windows collects information about the process and the hardware used during installation. This information then ends up at Microsoft on the Internet. You prevent this with the switch telemetry.setup / telemetry disable


If the installation of Windows fails, you can try again and this time have the log files saved to an external drive, such as the USB stick from which you start the installation. The “Auto” switch carries out a largely automated installation or upgrade. This will speed up the process considerably. However, this method also does not get along completely without dialogues. The “Auto” switch has five options. The most important are “Clean” for a new installation that does not take into account the existing Windows. The “Upgrade” option takes over both data and programs from the existing Windows. “Dataonly” only keeps user files from the standard folders during the upgrade. setup / auto upgrade


You should not be too happy about the “unattend” parameter. Although it basically allows a customized installation without any input, the parameter requires a so-called answer file that provides the setup with all the necessary information. Creating these is usually only worthwhile for administrators who have to upgrade many PCs. The answer file can be very detailed, but it can also be kept short. But it doesn’t work without it.
