After being delayed several times, there is now finally a launch date for it Wonder Woman 1984. Warner Bros. announced that the film will be released in theaters on Christmas in the United States and will be shown on the streaming platform HBO Max. There is even better news for other countries, because the film will be in theaters there from 16 December.
Wonder Woman 1984 is one of many films that has faced the global corona crisis. However, expectations for the second film with Gal Gadot in the role of Wonder Woman were high. The first Wonder Woman from 2017 was a huge success with a worldwide box office of 820 million dollars (693 million euros).
Postponed several times
Because almost all cinemas worldwide were closed to prevent the spread of the corona virus, Warner Bros. postpone his blockbuster though. Normally, the launch was already planned for June. A first postponement set the release date to August, but that turned out not to be feasible.
That is why the studio had to look for a new alternative. That turned out to be a double release via streaming and in the cinema, in the United States anyway.
Cinema and streaming
“As we navigate these unprecedented times, we needed to be innovative to move our businesses forward while continuing to serve our fans,” said Ann Sarnoff, Chairman and CEO of WarnerMedia Studios. “This is a great movie that really comes to life on the big screen. We will therefore offer that option to consumers in the US where cinemas are open. We realize that because of the pandemic, many consumers cannot go back to the movies, so we want to give them the opportunity to Wonder Woman 1984 can be viewed via our HBO Max platform. ”
On Twitter, Gal Gadot adds the following. “It was not an easy decision and we never thought the release would be so late, but Covid disrupted our whole world,” she writes.
Since HBO Max is not available in Belgium, the film will only be released in the cinema here. That will also be earlier than in the US, namely in the week of December 16.
