Wouter Beke: “Belgium orders 5 million doses of Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine”

Our country will order 5 million doses of the corona vaccine from Pfizer-BioNTech, through its European purchase. Flemish Minister of Welfare Wouter Beke (CD&V) said this in the Flemish Parliament on Wednesday.

With those 5 million doses, 2.5 million Belgians can be vaccinated, because a complete vaccination requires two doses of the vaccine. Until now, our country had only signed a deal with the AstraZeneca-Oxford and Johnson & Johnson group. Now there is also Pfizer-BioNTech.

Just today, it was announced that Pfizer will be applying for accelerated approval from the US drug watchdog FDA within days. Full study results from the clinical trials show that the vaccine is 95 percent effective. 170 confirmed corona cases were evaluated, with 162 cases observed in the placebo group versus 8 in the vaccination group.

“We are proud to partner with BioNTech to announce that the Phase 3 trial of our COVID-19 vaccine candidate has met all primary efficacy endpoints,” Pfizer said on Twitter. “To date, no serious safety concerns regarding the vaccine candidate have been reported,” the social media platform said.
