German ace thwarted
The World Touring Car Championship came to an end in Aragon. It was an unusual season. Luca Engstler second best rookie.
Yann Ehrlacher is the overall 2020 World Cup winner. The Frenchman prevailed against Uncle Yvan Muller in an internal family duel. Both drive for the Chinese manufacturer Lynk & Co.
Luca Engstler, Germany’s hopeful touring car youngster, finished his season in 16th place, making him second-best rookie – behind Audi driver Gilles Magnus (5th).

Engstler, who competed in a Hyundai i30 N for the family team, would have hoped for more. But Hyundai was thwarted by the balance of performance. At the home race at the Nürburgring, of all places, the Koreans withdrew all cars to put pressure on the rule keepers.
The best Hyundai driver was last year’s champion Norbert Michelisz – in 13th place!
Positive for Engstler: apart from three races, he scored points in every run. The conditions for rookies were not ideal anyway: the season only started in September and lasted less than three months. There was hardly time to put the experience gained into practice.
Now is the time for that in winter. “It was an apprenticeship year for me. I want to attack next year, ”explains Engstler.
