A German in the World Touring Car Cup

The WTCR starts the new season at the weekend. A German is there: Luca Engstler. These are his goals.

JThe touring car world cup is now starting, after a long break due to the corona pandemic. A young German is there: Luca Engstler, son of touring car legend Franz Engstler.

The man from the Allgäu will start in a Hyundai i30 N TCR (two-liter four-cylinder, 350 hp) in the family team. “I used the long break and trained physically. For me as a rookie, it doesn’t matter whether I have to relearn all the routes in March or now in September, ”said Engstler to AUTO BILD.

In 2019, he made six guest starts in the WTCR. Still, he’s a rookie. Engstler: “Gabriele Tarquini has already driven the DTM car, I wasn’t born then. So it is difficult to set concrete goals. For me it is not important, let’s say second, I want to get the best out of it and win the rookie title. “

The aforementioned Tarquini, a former Formula 1 driver, is not a bit tired of racing even at 58. In 2018 he won the title for Hyundai, in 2019 his teammate Norbert Michelisz, for whose racing team Engstler competed in TCR Europe in 2019. Hyundai is one of the favorites again in 2020.

The other two Japanese manufacturers will also be strong: Lynk & Co from China, with touring car legend Yvan Muller at the wheel, and Honda with ex-Formula 1 driver Tiago Monteiro behind the wheel, among others.
VW has left, however, Renault comes with a Mégane R.S. Audi is still represented by warrior Tom Coronel, among others. Cupra and Alfa Romeo will join them. A total of 20 regular drivers are registered in Zolder, plus one guest starter.
