The sales of roof tents more than doubled last year, Camp Magazine researched. There is no direct reason for this increase; some want back to basics, others want freedom, adventure or the feeling of flexibility. Corona will also have contributed: with all its limitations, car camping is one of the few ways to get away from it all.
The biggest advantage of camping with a tent on your car, instead of on the ground? The fact that you are high and dry. After a heavy rain shower, your tent on the ground can sometimes get clammy and damp. In any case, while camping on your car, the moisture cannot penetrate through the bottom of the tent and the rising cold will also pass you by more. In addition, your camp is set up and closed again in no time, making it ideal for short stops. Camping in this way does not take up extra space either; only the car’s footprint counts.
Nowadays, the use of a roof tent is no longer just for people with a 4×4, but they fit on almost all cars. Special roof tents have been developed for some car brands, such as for the MINI Countryman. There is a choice of different brands, sizes and a hard or soft exterior. Finally, you can opt for all kinds of extras, up to an awning. The average price for a roof tent is between one thousand and five thousand euros.

At practically all campsites you can already stay by car, although there is a chance that you have to stand on a camper place, instead of a regular place. However, many people will prefer to camp wild; unzip your tent and wake up in the middle of overwhelming nature. Unfortunately, it is not allowed everywhere to park and stay overnight. Check on the internet where this is possible, so that you can still look for adventure.
How’s that, sleeping on your roof? Melanie and Bram Verheijen are car campers. After an episode of Floortje they had gone to the end of the world. They too wanted to travel more, with a 4×4 plus roof tent. “We sold our house, had a tiny house built and now the goal is to be away for a month two or three times a year.”
The biggest difference with traveling with a camper is the freedom: it is easier to really get into nature. “In addition, the comfort of a roof tent is greater than that of a normal tent. You sleep off the floor and on a mattress and you always lie on a straight surface through the car. Setting it up takes just five minutes; where others are still fiddling and we are already having a beer. ”
“It is back to basic camping, but with luxury. Because you drive a car you can charge almost anything nowadays. You can brush your teeth with an electric toothbrush while you are off-road enjoying a view of the mountains. ”
